Un Pueblo Sin Piernas pero Que Camina (Ugolino)
2022
“Sin piernas pero camina”
Created in 2022, through Santa Fe’s Art and Culture Department’s Art in Public Places Program, this sculpture of a legless giant, is meant to comment on the disparities in Santa Fe and the perseverance of the community living in Santa Fe’s southside. Based on a lyric from the Calle 13 song “Latinoamérica,” the idea of a legless giant is meant to show the in-between state of rootedness and uncertainty of immigrant communities who live here and also how important working families from the Southside are for the wellbeing of our entire city. The lyric: “Un pueblo sin piernas pero que camina,” literally translates into “A nation without legs that continues to move (or walk forward),” reflects what it means for a marginalized community to persevere and continue despite hardship. I want the sculpture to serve as a symbol for the strife of immigrant community and their effort to support their children’s futures and continue moving forward.
