Querencia

2019-Present

Querencia is a collaborative artwork made by artists Hernan Gomez Chavez and Yvette Serrano. It is meant to look like a mobile home, a reference to the homes the artists grew up. The title comes from the Spanish word Querencia, defined as the place where one was raised, a place where one feels bonds of affection and belonging– a sense of home.

“The place that nurtures you, where you belong, where you feel safe.”

The purpose of this project is to engage in dialogue about belonging and home and all that comes with it; displacement, food access, and transportation equity in Santa Fe, NM. We will be setting up in common gathering spaces off of Airport Rd and invite the surrounding communities to join us in conversation.

During the summer of 2021 we asked people to participate by telling us what their “querencias” were. The video documented by the artists shows different responses relaying what home and belonging mean to different people living in Santa Fe.

Tuvimos que reprogramar el evento debido al clima. Nos da placer en anunciar nuestro último evento de la obra Querencia. Este evento será una colaboración ente nosotros y Barrios Unidos, una organización basada en Chimayo, NM. Esta colaboración esta centrada en convivir como comunidad a través de una fiesta. Hacer una fiesta con comida sirve para incluir la participación de la comunidad: una conversación entre gente sobre el significado de querencia y el hogar. También tendremos actividades continuas durante todo el evento; grabado, un taller de remedios de Barrios Unidos y musica a cargo de la DJ @nalgona_superstar —————————- We had to reschedule this event due to the weather, but here it is! We are happy to announce our last event as Querencia. This is a collaboration between us and Barrios Unidos, an organization based out of Chimayo. This collaboration centers community building through a potluck. The potluck will serve as an intersection for community engagement— a conversation with one another about querencia. This event is for our neighbors, friends, and family that have helped make this project a reality.
